Celebrating First Nations Families: The Stunning Artwork of Colleen Raven Strangways and Jakirah Telfer

If you’re in Rundle Mall this week, make sure to stop by and take a look at the beautiful photographic series on display, created by Aboriginal artists Colleen Raven Strangways (Arabana woman) and Jakirah Telfer (Kaurna Narungga woman). Their work, which was unveiled on Tuesday at the NAIDOC in the Mall event, shines a light on the beauty and strength of First Nations families.

About the Artwork

Through their photography, Colleen and Jakirah have shared a glimpse of what it means to be connected to Country, to family, and to our community. It’s about stories passed down through generations, celebrating the strength and spirit of our people.

Why It Matters

Art is a powerful tool for sharing our stories. For Colleen and Jakirah, it’s about expressing their culture, their families, and the lived experience of being Aboriginal. It’s not just about celebrating our culture for a week – it’s about creating a lasting space for our voices, our families, and our traditions in everyday life. This exhibition is another way of showing how we stand proud and strong, continuing to build respect and understanding for our people and our history.

We’re proud to see these two incredible artists sharing their stories with the wider community. This is just one of many ways our culture is being celebrated and shared, and we’re thankful to Colleen, Jakirah, and all of the Aboriginal artists and creatives who continue to inspire and educate.

Let’s keep celebrating who we are, where we come from, and the future we’re building together.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live, work, and play. We recognise the cultural, spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual and economic connection to their lands, water, flora, and fauna. We honour and pay respects to all elders; past, present, and emerging, as well as all generations of people now and into the future, for they hold the memories and the future.
